Gavin Newsom was forty days into his first term as mayor. The legal battles that followed all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court in 2015 were built on the foundation of those few weeks in February. Lawyers used the stories of those couples to prove that "separate but equal" was a failure in the context of the heart.

Newsom didn't just survive the political suicide; he redefined what survival looked like. He showed that sometimes, the only way to lead is to get so far ahead of the pack that they have no choice but to run to catch up with you.

Today, we look back at 2004 and it seems inevitable. Of course, people should be allowed to marry whom they love. But "inevitable" is a word we use to describe things that people once bled for. It’s a word we use for the risks we didn't have to take ourselves.

The true weight of leadership isn't found in the moments where everyone agrees. It’s found in the basement of a city hall, in the rain, with a pen in hand, knowing that the person on the other side of the desk has waited fifty years for you to find your courage.

The ink on those first licenses might have been technically invalidated by a court, but it never actually dried; it just soaked into the floorboards of the country, changing the color of the wood forever.
