Most kids spend family vacations hunting for souvenirs or ice cream. Eleven-year-old Touren Pope walked away from a trip to southwest Wyoming with a 48-million-year-old piece of prehistoric history.

While exploring public land in the Greater Green River Basin alongside his grandparents, the sixth-grader from Nevada spotted a tiny, unassuming patch of brown stone sticking out of the dirt. That two-inch speck of exposed material turned out to be the edge of a nearly complete, foot-wide fossilized softshell turtle shell. Decoding the Bridger Formation

Finding a vertebrate fossil like this isn't just about luck. It requires understanding where to look. Touren made his discovery in the Bridger Formation, a geological layer unique to southwest Wyoming that dates back to the Eocene Epoch.

Long before it became an arid, windswept landscape, this region looked vastly different. Think lush, tropical floodplains, winding rivers, and massive ancient water systems teeming with crocodiles, early mammals, fish, and diverse turtle species. Most professional paleontologists scouring these badlands focus heavily on rare finds like early primates and lemurs. Everyday creatures like turtles often get pushed to the background. Yet, finding a well-preserved softshell turtle carapace belonging to the trionychid family provides critical data on ancient aquatic ecosystems. Softshell fossils are fragile and rarely turn up complete, making Touren's find scientifically valuable.

The Right Way to Handle a Major Find

Too many amateur rockhounds make the mistake of pocketing or damaging vertebrate fossils they stumble upon. Touren and his grandparents, Patti and Tom Patterson, did the exact opposite.

When they realized the stone was something extraordinary, they left it completely undisturbed. They contacted the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Rock Springs Field Office right away.

J.P. Cavigelli, a collections specialist at the Tate Geological Museum in Casper, noted that timing is everything with surface fossils. Once weathering pushes a fossil to the surface, natural erosion destroys it quickly. Reporting it immediately saved the specimen from turning to dust.

Getting Hands-On With Science

Instead of just handing over the coordinates and walking away, Touren got a front-row seat to professional paleontology. He received school permission to take a few days off and returned to the site with a field crew from the Tate Geological Museum.

Experts isolated the fragile shell from the surrounding rock matrix, encasing it in burlap-soaked plaster jackets to ensure safe transport. Touren helped the crew during the excavation process.

Museum officials gave him the ultimate reward for his responsible reporting: the privilege of naming the specimen. He chose "Little Timmy". The fossil now resides at the Tate Geological Museum, where staff cleaned and stabilized it for ongoing research and eventual public exhibit.
